Allergies or Air Quality: What’s Making You Sneeze?

It’s no fun to feel under the weather. Allergies are one of the most common causes of irritated eyes, scratchy throat, congestion, and coughing. But what if the symptoms don’t go away after the allergen is no longer present? You could have poor air quality in your home.

How Can I Tell If I Have Allergies or Poor Air Quality?

It can be hard to tell if you have allergies or poor air quality when the symptoms can be so similar. Here are some signs poor air quality is the culprit.

  • Your symptoms continue when the allergen is no longer present. Whether it’s cat dander, ragweed, or dust, if your allergies don’t improve when the allergen is reduced, it indicates there is another reason.
  • You have visible mold in your home. Mold is one of the most common causes of poor air quality. If you have visible mold, you usually have a large infestation.
  • You have water damage. Even if you can’t see mold yet, it grows easily in damp materials. Some molds can grow in as little to 24 to 48 hours on a damp surface. Past water damage could mean you have mold hiding somewhere you haven’t noticed it.
  • You haven’t cleaned your air ducts in a long time. All of the air in your home circulates through your HVAC system. If you’re having unexplained symptoms, dirty ducts can be the cause – harboring mold, rodent waste, or microbes. If it’s been a while, you should get your HVAC system professionally cleaned.

When Should I Call a Professional?

If you think the cause of your symptoms is poor air quality, the next step is to get an air quality test to find the cause. Once you know what’s wrong, a professional can work with you to remedy the cause of your poor air quality. For example, if mold is present in your home, a professional mold remediator can completely contain and remove the mold.
