Restoring Your Bathroom From an Overflowing Sink or Bathtub

Across the United States, sink and bathtub overflows are very common. They often happen simply because someone gets distracted and they forget the water is running. If this happens for a long time, especially overnight or longer, massive water damage can occur.

The Dangers of a Sink or Bathtub Overflow

Fortunately, the water coming from your bathtub and sink is completely safe for consumption. Little bacteria exist, and harm is not immediately caused. However, the threat does develop.

When a lot of time passes and the water overflow is not cleaned up, bacteria grows and thrives. To make matters even worse, if the standing water is not 100% removed (including the resulting moisture), bacteria and mold can grow without you even realizing that this is happening.

Because of the reasons listed above, we recommend you contact Green Restoration whenever a sink or bathtub overflow happens. Our cleanup experts are available 24/7 in Connecticut counties and in Westchester County, NY, and we only use safe, bio-degradable, and eco-friendly cleaning solutions. At the same time, all equipment we use is professional.

What To Do After a Sink or Bathtub Overflow

The trick with overflowing water is reacting as fast as possible. As soon as the sink or bathtub overflow is identified, take the following steps:

Turn Off The Bathroom Water Supply – Most bathroom fixtures, including the bathtub and the sink, have a shut-off valve. You need to turn off the water supply with this valve. In the event that you cannot get to it, the shut-off valve is frozen, or you do not know where it is, turn off the water supply to the entire bathroom. If this also fails, you have to turn off the water supply to the whole house.

Turn Off Electricity – If possible, turn off the electricity just to the bathroom, although you will usually need to turn off the entire home’s power supply. Electrocution is a huge hazard in flooded indoor rooms. If you notice that there is too much water on the floor, you need to turn off the electricity first. In rare occasions, an electrician actually has to clear the room and mark it as safe before other experts can enter.

Remove All Standing Water – Always use old towels, mops, and floor squeegees to remove all standing water from the floor safely. That water needs to go down the drain quickly. It is also safe to use a regular vacuum cleaner that can be safely used to remove liquids. After you remove the standing water, make sure you remove all soaked rugs.

Continuously Circulate Air – Open all the windows and use fans if you have them. The goal is to start moving the air and start the drying process.

This drastically reduces the extent of the damage and can even lower your repair bills.
