April Showers Bring May Mold & Mildew

Spring is a lovely time of the year and a great time to clean out the winter cobwebs from your home. But spring rains can cause mold and mildew and ruin your spring cleaning. Why is spring a prime time for mold, and how can you prevent it?

Why Can Spring Showers Cause Mold?

Just like spring flowers, mold loves water! Spring rains can expose leaks and bring high humidity, leading to water damage. Mold can grow in as little as 24 to 48 hours on a moist surface.

How Can I Prevent Spring Mold?

Here are some easy ways to monitor and prevent spring mold:

  • When you’re spring cleaning, add a home inspection to your list. You should check to make sure your sump pump is working correctly, your roof isn’t leaking, and your gutters are clean.
  • Monitor humidity levels. Mold can grow in humidity as low as 60%, and as the weather warms up, the outdoor humidity can raise the indoor humidity of your home. If necessary, invest in a dehumidifier.
  • Keep an eye on water damage. Stains on your walls, bulging or bubbling paint, or unexplained wet surfaces in your house are some easy to notice signs of water damage. If a leak is left unfixed, water damage can quickly become expensive and lead to mold.

When Should I Hire a Professional?

If you notice signs of water damage in your home, it’s important to call a professional as soon as possible. The sooner you thoroughly clean and dry the area, the less time mold has to grow. Also, if you see or smell mold, it’s probable that there is more mold in your home that you can’t see. Once you have mold, it’s time to call in a professional right away so they can find the extent of your mold problem and remove existing mold to prevent further damage to your home.
